Virginia Beach is an independent city located in the southern coastal region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Despite being the largest city in the state, Virginia Beach is sometimes referred to as a suburb of Norfolk. Virginia Beach covers a relatively large area consisting mostly of farmland, marshes, and rural areas. However, the city sits on the beautiful Atlantic Coast at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. This is a major resort area with miles of beaches and coastline containing hundreds of hotels, restaurants, and other public venues. There are several state parks, protected beaches, and two great universities. The population is around 425,000, and the city has many quality public school institutions. A few naval bases dot the coast with the military presence being a positive.
Along with the amazing tidewater coastline, all of these elements combine to create one great city in which to live.

Virginia Beach is steeped in history as it is the original landing site of the English colonists headed for Jamestown. As this ocean-weary party came ashore and climbed the sandy beach dunes to spy upon the blooming dogwoods and ascending jasmines of the coastal woodlands, Master George Percy wrote, "Heaven and Earth never agreed better to frame a place for man's habitations than Virginia." In fact, 2007 marks the 400th anniversary of this momentous and important occasion. With all this history comes a copious amount of culture and folklore. There are many historical, scientific, and entertaining sites to visit, from old lighthouses and parks to performing arts centers and aquariums.
