An independent city on the southeastern side of the Virginia Peninsula, opposite Norfolk and Portsmouth across the Hampton Roads, Newport News has around 179,000 residents and is Virginia’s fifth largest city. The city takes its name from William and Thomas Newce who established a “new port settlement” in the 1620s. Being seated on the large and winding James River, which feeds into the Hampton Roads, Newport News relies heavily on shipping and ocean-related industries. There are also two international airports in the area and corporate railroad and transportation giants.
